Austin Holiday Bucket List

christmas-tree-austin-holiday.jpg

So, you’re staying in town this holiday season? Great! We are too. Honestly, in the past year, I think I’ve taken more flights than ever before. Last year at this time, I was in India for work. So, I’m really looking forward to a cozy (read: lazy) Christmas in our new home.  My parents are going to join us in Austin for Christmas, and I’m really looking forward to having them here.

However, we can’t sit in the house for a whole week. So, I decided to curate a list of things to do while they are here, and maybe they’ll be helpful for you nd your family & friends too.

  • Trail of Lights

    • Now until December 23rd, Zilker Park transforms into a sea of magical Christmas lights. If you prefer less crowds, I’d suggest going through the week. There are still a few days left that offer FREE general admission.

  • Mozart’s

    • Now until January 5, 2020 - Mozart’s Coffee Roasters puts on a spectacular light show - with over 1 million lights. Admission is free and the show runs daily from 6:00 - 11:00 pm. We’ve never done this one, so it’s at the top of our list this year.

  • Miracle Bar

    • Miracle bars pop up all over the country this time of year, and if you’re looking for something festive - this is it! Desiring cocktails that are decked in holiday cheer? Try the Snowball Old Fashioned or Run Run Rudolph! Located at The Eleanor (The Roosevelt Room) downtown. Last year we visited a Miracle bar in our hometown over the holidays, and it was a great place to hang out with friends.

  • Blue Genie Art Bazaar

    • Are you still holiday shopping? I have barely started. But, this is a great place to buy gifts made by local and regional artists! It is open now through December 24th! And, I have my eye on it for stocking stuffers with an Austin twist!

  • A Christmas Carol @ Zach Theatre

    • There’s just something about seeing a show at the theatre that says HOLIDAYS to me. Even though it was never an annual tradition in our household, those are some of my favorite memories I look back on. There are still seats available for many of the showings of the classic performance — A Christmas Carol.

  • Flower Vault Holiday Installations

    • Maybe you haven’t taken any family photos this year? Well, you’re in luck because Austin has the perfect Instagram (and holiday card) worthy backdrops to take photos. The installations change from time to time, but right now there are tons of great holiday backdrops. Located at The Domain - open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Ticket information is on their website.

  • Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch

    • Ok, so this isn’t covered in garland and lights. But, I thought this would be a fun way to get out of the house and explore. Located just south of Austin in New Braunfels, the ranch is 450-acres of protected environment for all sorts of animals. You drive through in your own vehicle and come nose-to-nose with many of them. I’m really looking forward to this - have you done it?

I snagged this last idea from my friend, Dana, and it’s something you can do no matter your location. It starts with making Christmas cookies, hot cocoa in to-go mugs and then driving around your own neighborhood
to look at all the beautiful lights.

I’m interested to know if you have any Austin holiday traditions, especially if they are ones I didn’t mention here. Let me know in the comments, and feel free to pin the graphic below to keep handy!

DIY RUSTIC HOLIDAY WREATH

DIY RUSTIC HOLIDAY WREATH.png

With Thanksgiving behind us, the holidays are officially here. I like to wait to decorate for Christmas until after Thanksgiving because I truly love Fall so much. But, thanks to Mother Nature it actually SNOWED in Austin last night. Snowy Christmases are what my dreams are made of, and I was like a little kid dancing in the drive way. I don't think there was a better way to kick off the start of this festive season.

I've been browsing all the online sales for Christmas decor - even though the best time to buy is after the season ends, of course!

These prices are crazy! Call me frugal, call me cheap. I just have such a hard time spending money on decorations. Partly because I have commitment issues when it comes to interior design. Especially outside of seasonal decor.

diy-ing my own holiday wreath seemed like the best option - because i could customize the look i wanted.

So, one Sunday afternoon I went to it. I was so impressed with the outcome I wanted to share it with all of you. A few of the items were purchased previously and not necessarily for this purpose intially, but I'll try to include the estimated cost from my memory. I really wanted this to be an affordable DIY because I think we've all spotted something on Etsy and hundreds of dollars worth of craft supplies later, it probably would've been better to just make the Etsy purchase. HAHA!

WHAT YOU'LL NEED:

DIY RUSTIC HOLIDAY WREATH SUPPLIES
  • Flocked boxwood garland (not pictured above) - I scored two flocked garlands. I spent $6. Thank you, Target dollar section. I wasn't really sure what I wanted to do with these when I bought them, but I'm so glad I picked them up now.
  • Rose gold fairy lights  (not pictured above) - I think I got these on a Lightning Deal from Amazon Prime for $9.
  • Twigs - Free from the great outdoors.
  • Jute twine - You can get this at any craft store dollar bin. It's just naturally colored twine.
  • Hot glue gun + glue sticks - You may already have this. Don't hate - my glue gun is from the 5th grade. We've been through a lot together !

    DIRECTIONS

I have some progression photos in the slider above - but if you have any questions, feel free to DM me on social media or comment below.

    1. Gather some twigs from your front yard. The twigs should be skinny and a little flexible.
    2. Group twigs into small bundles of 4-5 and tie the ends with jute twine.
    3. Lay the bundles in the desired shape. If you used flexy twigs it makes it easier to get a more rounded wreath. However, I like that mine came out a bit uneven and not perfectly round.
    4. Next, bind the bundles together with more jute twine and hot glue to secure the shape.
    5. Add a loop of jute twine around the top of the wreath, so that it's easy to hang from your door or a hook.
    6. Begin to wrap the flocked boxwood garland around the wreath.
    7. Add the fairy lights - I wrapped mine around twice because the ones I have were pretty long.
    8. To secure the battery box, I hot glued two magnets to the back of the pack. I have a metal door, so this worked perfectly because I can hide the box behind the wreath. If you don't have a metal door, I would suggest using some 3M poster hanging tabs.
    9. Hit the switch on the battery box. And,....wah-lah! You have a custom wreath that easily could've cost you $50 or more!

I wanted to show an additional option to add a letter - this could be your last initial or in my case part of my address.
